Suicide bomber kills at least 27 people at a mosque in Afghanistan

A Suicide bomber killed at least 27 people at Shia Muslim mosque in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul.

The attacker arrived on foot and blew himself up among worshippers inside the mosque. A lot of people were wounded and at least 27 people dead.

The chief of the Kabul’s police Criminal Investigation Department Fraidoon Obaidi said: At least 27 people were killed and 35 people wounded”


Although United Nations have claimed that at least 32 had been killed and more than 50 wounded, including many children. It described the attack as “an atrocity”.

A survivor told Afghanistan’s Ariana Television “I saw people screaming and covered in blood,” he added that before the rescue team arrived at the scene close to 40 people dead and 80 wounded had been taken away from the building where the bombing took place. Another witness said he had helped carry 30-35 bodies from the mosque.

The bombing took place on Monday 21st of November 2016 during a service to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and a Shia martyr. Eyewitnesses said the service was almost over when the bomb was detonated.


“I was inside the mosque and the Mullah was reading the prayer,” Ewaz Ali, 50, who suffered minor injuries, told the Associated Press news agency.

“Suddenly a huge explosion happened, then everywhere was dark.”

Another witness Mujahid said that children and women were also among the victims of the bombing attack.

ISIS claimed they carried out the suicide bomb attack which took place on Monday 21st of November 2016 in Shia Muslim mosque in Afghanistan. They said the attack was carried out by an IS “fighter” but gave no other details on its self-styled Amaq news agency. It has been estimated that around 20% of the Afghanistan population are Shia Muslims.
