Spain and Portugal tackles massive fire outbreak from northeastern Portugal.

Deadly wildfires broke out across Spain and Portugal during the weekend and continued into Monday. Thousands of firefighters are battling the blazes which started over the weekend in northeastern Portugal and areas of Spain due to hot and dry conditions.

The situation was made worse as Hurricane Ophelia approached the west coast of Europe, bringing strong winds which fanned the flames.Around 500 blazes were reported in the country’s central and northern regions where a state of emergency has been declared.

Soaring temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius have been recorded – extraordinary for mid-October. More than 100 fires were still burning late Sunday night with more than 5,000 firefighters battling the flames.

Weather experts claim that the fires on the Iberian peninsula are being fanned by strong winds from Hurricane Ophelia.
