Bombing at popular car market in Baghdad the Republic of Iraq has killed more than 40 people.

More than 40 people were killed and dozens more injured at a bomb blast which occurred on Thursday evening, in a popular car market at southwestern Baghdad, a car packed with explosives blew up in the south of Baghdad, the Republic of Iraq.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility in a brief statement circulated on social media for the attack which took place on Thursday in Baghdad the Iraqi capital.

Security sources said that the bomb was placed in a parked car at the market in Bayaa neighborhood, southwest of the city, between Baghdad International Airport and the Tigris River, some even said that the vehicle which blew up was parked in a crowded street full of garages and used car dealers.

The explosion, which sent a thick plume of dark grey smoke billowing into the sky, sowed carnage and caused extensive destruction.

The attack was at least the third bombing in the capital in as many days, and it appeared to be aimed at diverting the government as it prepares an offensive to drive the Islamic State from the northern city of Mosul, the militants’ last major stronghold in Iraq.
